The Manual Method: Step by Step

Calculating your exact age involves comparing your birth date to today’s date across three units: years, months, and days. Here’s how to do it manually.

1. Subtract the years. Take the current year minus your birth year. Example: 2026 − 1995 = 31.
2. Check the month and day. If today’s month and day haven’t reached your birth month and day yet this year, subtract 1 from your year total — your birthday hasn’t happened yet this year.
3. Calculate the remaining months. Subtract your birth month from the current month (adding 12 if the result is negative, and subtracting 1 from your months count).
4. Calculate the remaining days. Subtract your birth day from the current day. If the result is negative, borrow days from the previous month.

Worked Example

Let’s say you were born on March 15, 1995, and today is September 14, 2026.

• Years: 2026 − 1995 = 31
• Since September 14 is after March 15, the birthday has already happened this year, so no adjustment is needed.
• Months: September (9) − March (3) = 6 months
• Days: 14 − 15 = −1, so borrow from August (31 days): 31 + 14 − 15 = 30, and subtract 1 month, leaving 5 months
• Final result: 31 years, 5 months, 30 days

Why It’s Easy to Get Wrong
